Chicago Bears pass rusher Robert Quinn is a no-show once again for the team’s mandatory minicamp this week, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport Tuesday.
Quinn spent the entire offseason training on his own, sparking trade rumors and speculation that he didn’t want to return to the Bears in 2022. General manager Ryan Poles has shown no indication that a Quinn trade is imminent. But the veteran’s failure to buy-in this offseason is at least noteworthy.
Coach Matt Eberflus’ frustration was obvious after practice on Tuesday.
“We’re not talking about that as an organization,” Eberflus said. “Obviously we hoped he would be here. He’s not. Ryan (Poles) and his staff are going to work through that.”
RELATED: Is Robert Quinn the Bears’ most overrated player?
Quinn, 32, set the Bears’ single-season sack record in 2021 with 18.5. He’s expected to be Chicago’s primary pass-rusher after the team traded Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason.
The Bears signed former Colts edge rusher Muhammad Al-Quadin in free agency and drafted Miami-OH athlete Dominique Robinson in the fifth round. Third-year pro Trevis Gipson is a breakout candidate in 2022 after recording seven sacks last year. The pass-rush has upside, but Quinn’s presence in the lineup is critical.
Robert Quinn is expected to report on time for training camp later next month. If, however, he’s a no-show? All bets are off. It’s unlikely he’ll be on the roster in 2023. And his failure to appear isn’t helping his cause to be around in 2022, either.
