2022 Season
Could Michael Schofield be the answer Bears need at right guard?
The Chicago Bears worked out veteran offensive lineman Michael Schofield as a possible solution for their right guard vacancy …
The Chicago Bears will begin their 2022 training camp this week without a clear starter at right guard. It’s one of several positions that remain unsettled along the offensive line, but unlike this summer’s offensive tackle competition, a viable candidate to start at right guard doesn’t seem like he’s on the roster right now.
General manager Ryan Poles could be thinking the same thing. He had veteran offensive lineman Michael Schofield in Chicago for a workout Sunday.

Schofield is a veteran of 81 starts since entering the league as a third-round pick out of Michigan in 2014. He started 12 games at right guard for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021.
If signed, Schofield would begin Chicago Bears training camp as the likely starter. Other candidates include Sam Mustipher and rookie Zachary Thomas. Former second-round pick Teven Jenkins could get kicked inside, too, if he struggles on the edge during practice sessions.
Here are the strengths from Michael Schofield’s scouting report, via NFL.com, prior to the 2014 NFL Draft:
- Good run blocker — drives his legs on contact and generates some power through his lower body
- Can steer, control and lock down defenders once he gets his hands on them
- Good playing demeanor — gets after it and seeks to finish
- Is tough-minded and hardworking
- Gritty competitor
Schofield earned a 66.8 grade from Pro Football Focus in 2021, which was the second-highest season grade of his career from PFF.
