Chicago Bears Training Camp: Biggest takeaways from first practice

The first practice of the Chicago Bears’ 2022 training camp is in the books. Wednesday’s session was closed to the public, but members of Bears media began sharing nuggets from practice on Twitter.

Robert Quinn isn’t holding out

Bears practice No. 1 is complete. Ran about 80 minutes. Robert Quinn was practicing (didn’t do one on ones vs. OL but did shadow reps off to the side). Roquan Smith (PUP) was present as well riding the stationary bike near training room. pic.twitter.com/VGSPQ27LLJ

Bears make equipment changes for 2022 training camp

Some new things in Bears camp:

– Players had their last names on their jerseys.

– All OL, DL, LB and TE wore the extra padded helmets.

Kyler Gordon back at practice

Rookie cornerback Kyler Gordon saw some time at nickel today. But he also played outside opposite Jaylon Johnson. Bears could have a dynamic CB combo.

Riley Reiff and Michael Schofield being worked in slowly

New signees Riley Reiff and Michael Schofield didn’t take reps during team period, but Reiff worked at left tackle during individuals. Team period featured Braxton Jones at left tackle, Sam Mustipher/Ja’Tyre Carter at right guard and Larry Borom at right tackle.

Teven Jenkins could be Bears’ swing tackle

Teven Jenkins rotated sides as an extra lineman during team period.

Riley Reiff (LT) and Michael Schofield (RG) are still catching up to speed after signing just before camp. Expect their reps to increase as time goes on.

Bears are also looking at Teven Jenkins at swing tackle

Velus Jones Jr. flashes electric skill set

Rookie vs Rookie!

Velus Jones Jr. broke Kyler Gordon’s ankles with an inside move, and broke out for a wide open touchdown during the 1v1 red zone drill.

Jones’ demonstrating good ability to change direction on a dime and make the CB bite on the initial move.
