Bears OC Luke Getsy on Justin Fields: ‘We’re lucky to have him’

For the first time in his young career, Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields is “the guy.” Unlike his rookie season, when former coach Matt Nagy refused to give him a fair opportunity to unseat Andy Dalton for the starting job, Fields is now the unquestioned leader of the Bears offense. In fact, he’s the unquestioned leader of the entire team.
Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy met with reporters after training camp practice on Thursday and sang Fields’ praises.
“(Justin Fields) doesn’t ask anybody to do anything he doesn’t expect of himself,” Getsy said. “That guy, he’s a natural born leader type of guy. So we’re lucky to have a guy like that leading this thing.”
Fields” development in his second season is the most important factor for a successful 2022 campaign. Even if the Chicago Bears end the year with a losing record, the season will be deemed a win if Fields proves he’s the franchise quarterback the Bears have been lacking since their inception.
Justin Fields started 10 games in 2021 (appeared in 12), finishing with a 2-8 record and completing just under 59% of his passes. He threw for 1,870 yards with seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His production wasn’t great, but neither was Nagy’s system or play-calling. Now, with Getsy calling the shots, Fields has a chance to be unlocked this fall.
