Bears coach Matt Eberflus classified Fields as day-to-day on Monday, but with an injury of this nature, the range of outcomes is wide. If surgery is needed, Fields’ season is over. If rest is what’s required, there’s a chance he can be back in a week or two.
Chicago’s bye is three weeks away, in Week 14. The Bears will likely sit Fields for the next two games and evaluate his recovery in Week 15. It’s critical that Fields gains valuable starter’s reps this season, even if there won’t be much to play for at year’s end. But if playing Fields risks a long-term injury, there’s no chance he’ll be on the grass again in 2022.
Eberflus said the Bears would provide a more detailed update on Fields’ condition on Wednesday.
