Luke Getsy says NFL Draft is the ‘most important reason’ why he’s coaching 2023 Senior Bowl
2023 Senior Bowl: Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy said NFL Draft evaluation is the most important reason why he’s coaching …
The 2023 Senior Bowl is off to a fast start, with the first few practice sessions already in the books. Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is the head coach of the American Team, and along with four other Bears assistant coaches, will have an up-close look at some of the top senior prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft.
“That’s the most important reason why I’m here,” Getsy said. “I keep the main goal the main thing, and that’s the final way to get our team to be a better football team. And this gives you a great opportunity to dive into the type of men they are. We’re trying to build this organization with guys who love football, and so we get to find that out when you get to be so hands-on.”
The Senior Bowl is traditionally the unofficial start of NFL Draft season, and for some coaches like Getsy, it’s the first time they’ve been exposed to this year’s group of potential pros.
“I’m in every meeting room,” Getsy said. “I’m going to every position, so I’m getting to see how guys interact, see how they learn. Then I get to come out here and I get to observe every position, too. I’m trying to take advantage of that and not just keep it in one area. I’m trying to get as much information on as many of these guys as possible.”
The information Luke Getsy gathers will play a big part in the final draft grade for several of this year’s Senior Bowl players. It won’t be the whole grade, but general manager Ryan Poles will lean on Getsy’s feedback as a potential tie-breaker if two prospects are graded similarly on the Bears” draft board.
“That’s like the natural: Is this guy just a baller or not?” Getsy said. “You get to see the subtle movements. You get to see how they handle change, how fast they can learn something and then go out and perform it that quickly because that’s the world we live in. We can’t do the same thing every week, you’ve got to be able to adapt. So this is a really good opportunity.”
The Chicago Bears currently hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and while there are a handful of potential first-round picks at the Senior Bowl, none of them grade high enough for the Bears to consider at the top of Round 1. But that’s rarely when intel like Luke Getsy is gathering matters. Instead, Getsy will be a huge asset in the middle rounds, where championship rosters are built.
