New look Chicago Bears offense should have fans excited for 2023 season

The Chicago Bears offense has undergone a major facelift this offseason. Byron Pringle is no longer a starting wide receiver, and the Larry Borom experiment at right tackle is over.

Instead, the Bears have replaced both players with first-round pedigree in WR DJ Moore and RT Darnell Wright.

Cody Whitehair, who was one of the NFL’s promising young centers at one time, is moving back to the pivot, paving the way for guard Nate Davis, one of the best in the league, to join the new and improved starting five.

The depth at the Chicago Bears’ skill positions is notable, too. The running back room has a wide range of talent, with Khalil Herbert, D’Onta Foreman, and rookie Roschon Johnson. The pass-catchers have expanded to include Moore, Chase Claypool, Darnell Mooney, and speedy fourth-round pick Tyler Scott.

Even the tight end room has more touchdown potential with the addition of Robert Tonyan, who hit the paint 11 times in 2020 (he tore his ACL in 2021 and was slow to recover in 2022).

All signs indicate an incredibly explosive year for offensive coordinator Luke Getsy’s group. His system proved effective in spurts last season. The Bears ranked 23rd in the NFL in points per game (19.2) but had a stretch of four games beginning in Week 9 that they scored 29 points or more.

Getsy’s system has potential. It just needed the players. Now, he has them.

The same goes for Justin Fields, who enjoyed a near-historic season as a runner in 2022. His 1,143 rushing yards were the second-most in NFL history for a quarterback.

What was missing from Fields’ second year was consistency as a passer. He deserves some blame, but the depth chart didn’t help him either. There were times during the 2022 season when his No. 1 wideout was Dante Pettis.

Pettis might not make the final roster in 2023.

Fields finished the 2022 season completing 60% of his passes for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Excitement for the Chicago Bears offense is warranted. They’ve leveled up at almost every position. And with the expected development of Justin Fields in Year 3, there’s no telling how explosive this group can be.
