2023 Season
Here’s what Justin Fields must average to break Chicago Bears’ passing records
Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields said he will be the first Bears passer to eclipse 4,000 yards in a season. Here’s what he’ll need to average.
Justin Fields recently spoke with CBS Sports’ Bryant McFadden on the “All Things Covered” podcast and said he plans on being the first Chicago Bears quarterback to eclipse 4,000 passing yards in a season, which would also mean he plans on breaking the Bears’ single-season passing record.
Here’s the clip:

The current team passing record was set by Erik Kramer in 1995. Kramer threw for 3,838 yards in 16 games. Jay Cutler would’ve broken the record had he played all 16 games in 2014. Cutler suited up for 15 games and threw for 3,812 that year.
For Fields to break Kramer’s record, he’d have to average 226 passing yards per game. It seems like a number he should be able to hit now that DJ Moore and an assimilated Chase Claypool will be catching passes on the outside.
If Justin Fields wants to be the first Bears quarterback to cross the 4,000-yard threshold, he’ll need to throw for 235.3 yards per game. Again, it’s a number that in the modern NFL has become relatively easy to achieve, which makes Chicago’s futility understandably laughable.
Nine quarterbacks threw for more than 4,000 yards last season alone. Patrick Mahomes threw for over 5,000.
Even if Fields doesn’t become the first Chicago Bears to hit 4,000 yards, he must take significant steps forward from last year when he threw for just 2,242, which tied for 26th in the league.
