2023 Season
Here’s what Luke Getsy said about possibility of Tyson Bagent being Bears’ QB2
Tyson Bagent is all the rage for the Chicago Bears QB2 job, but offensive coordinator Luke Getsy said ‘not so fast’ to his rise up the depth chart.
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is an honest guy. At least, he appears that way. He doesn’t sugarcoat things during press conferences, and he comes across as a coach who says what he truly believes.
That’s why his comments Wednesday about Tyson Bagent possibly being the Bears’ QB2 this season are noteworthy.
“I mean anybody has a shot,” Getsy said of Bagent winning the job. “All three guys have done a really nice job through training camp. You guys have seen, like most of the guys in our training camp, good days and bad days for everybody. Those three specifically, so we’re taking all that in.”
Tyson Bagent stole the show in the Bears’ Week 2 preseason loss to the Colts, completing 9-of-10 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown run. He outplayed current backup quarterback PJ Walker, and it wasn’t particularly close.
But Getsy made it clear that the Bears’ depth chart won’t be built from one drive in one preseason game. Instead, it’s the result of evaluations that have been ongoing throughout the offseason.
“I know he had a great drive and that’s exciting for people,” Getsy said of Bagent, “but that is one drive. We’re going to make that a part of the evaluation, but we’re going to take the whole training camp evaluation before we make a decision like that.”
Perhaps that’s Getsy’s way of giving Walker a vote of confidence. Maybe he’s trying to distract the media from Bagent’s meteoric rise, if the Chicago Bears cut him, they’ll surely want him back on the practice squad. The more positive press he receives, the greater the chance another team will poach him.
The Bears must trim their roster to 53 players by August 29. Tyson Bagent isn’t a lock to make the final roster despite the buzz he’s generated over the last several days. It’d be a surprise if GM Ryan Poles cuts him loose, but anything’s possible in the NFL.
For now, Luke Getsy and the Bears don’t yet appear ready to crown him as QB2.
