The Chicago Bears won’t get respect until they begin winning games. They were the worst team in the NFL in 2022 (at least, they had the worst record), and while GM Ryan Poles has done his part to revamp the squad, it’s still a work in progress.

That’s why it shouldn’t be surprising that Pro Football Focus ranked the Bears’ roster near the bottom 10 teams in the NFL.

Chicago checked in at No. 22.

According to PFF, the biggest issue plaguing the Bears is the run defense.

“The Bears gave up the second-most rushing yards in the league last season,” PFF wrote. “That matches their 31st-ranked team run-defense grade, both marks finishing ahead of only Houston. Their front seven simply lacked starting-caliber talent last season, especially after Roquan Smith was traded. The Bears hope some new additions, primarily at linebacker, bring better results up front. The defensive line currently looks like the weakest unit on the team.”

The Bears are banking on two rookies, Gervon Dexter Sr. and Zacch Pickens, to help strengthen the interior defensive line. Linebackers Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards were big-ticket signings in free agency who should bolster the defense’s second level.

Chicago will feature several new starters on defense aside from those already mentioned. DeMarcus Walker and Yannick Ngakoue will start at defensive end, and rookie Tyrique Stevenson will join Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon at cornerback. The Bears got tougher and more physical with the new additions, which should translate into better production against the run.

Pro Football Focus pegged the Bears’ over/under win total at 7.5 games, which at first glance seems disappointing. But Chicago only won three games in 2022. If they approach eight wins this year, it’ll be a massive year-over-year improvement and proof that coach Matt Eberflus’ system is working.
