PFF Grades: Darnell Wright scores decent marks for Bears in Week 1 (2023 Season)

Pro Football Focus published their grades from the Chicago Bears’ Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and as expected, the offense didn’t receive many high marks.

In fact, the highest-graded player was rookie right tackle Darnell Wright, whose 72.1 — an average score — was the highest of any Bear.

Another rookie, running back Roschon Johnson, was next with a 71.5. Johnson’s grade was earned on only 29 snaps, whereas Wright logged a complete game (74 snaps).

The top five grades for Chicago Bears players who played at least 20 snaps are:

Wright (72.1)
Johnson (71.5)
D’Onta Foreman (68.5)
Khalil Herbert (65.5)
Darnell Mooney (63.8)

Justin Fields ranked ninth with a 60.9, which was primarily because of his 82.0 rushing score.

Surprisingly, left tackle Braxton Jones earned a near-elite pass-blocking grade (89.9). He was credited with only one pressure allowed. Jones’ pass-blocking grade was the highest individual score given to any Bear on offense (in any category).

As for who scored the lowest marks for Chicago’s offense, the bottom three grades belong to Cody Whitehair (47.2), Chase Claypool (43.2), and Lucas Patrick (43.2).

It’s easy to understand why the Chicago Bears offense struggled so much. Two-thirds of the interior offensive line was also two-thirds of the lowest PFF grades on offense. Not great.

As for Claypool, his prove-it year kicked isn’t off to a great start. If anything, he proved he doesn’t belong in the starting lineup. He ended Week 1 with zero catches and a shameful 31.0 run-blocking grade. He was a big reason why some of the Bears’ perimeter plays failed..

The Chicago Bears travel to Tampa Bay to face the Buccaneers in Week 2 in what’s suddenly become a more challenging game than expected. The Buccaneers upset the Minnesota Vikings in Week 1 and will provide another stiff test for the Bears’ offensive line.
