Chicago Bears PFF Grades: Khalil Herbert leads the way on offense in Week 2

Pro Football Focus grades for Week 2 are in, and Khalil Herbert was the pace car for the Chicago Bears’ offense.

Herbert finished Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with an 84.0 grade and a near-elite 88.2 rushing grade. He had only seven carries but averaged five yards per rush, ending with 35 yards and another 23 on his lone reception.

Herbert played 31 of 52 offensive snaps for the Chicago Bears, nearly splitting reps evenly with rookie Roschon Johnson, who logged 22. Johnson earned a 60.7 grade from PFF but had the longest run of the day, a 29-yard burst up the sideline. The Bears only gave him four carries that went for 32 yards.

It’s shocking how little offensive coordinator Luke Getsy called Herbert and Johnson’s numbers. The play-calling has been suspect through two games, and the fact the Bears haven’t made a concerted effort to establish a running game is mind-blowing, especially in Week 2, when Herbert and Johnson were running hard.

Tight end Cole Kmet had the second-highest Pro Football Focus grade on offense for the Bears with a 77.3. He had four catches for 38 yards.

Next was wide receiver DJ Moore (76.9), who was (sort of) featured in the passing game. He had seven targets, catching six of them for 104 yards. He is clearly Chicago’s most dynamic skill player and deserves no fewer than 10 targets per game.

Wide receiver Chase Claypool had a solid rebound game against the Buccaneers, earning the team’s fourth-highest grade on offense for players with at least 20 snaps. His 66.4 isn’t great, but it’s certainly an improvement following his poor showing against the Green Bay Packers in Week 1.

Claypool had eight targets and made three receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown.

Left tackle Braxton Jones rounds out the top-five PFF grades on offense for the Chicago Bears in Week 2 with a 63.4.

Jones has been steady for the Bears through the first two games despite Justin Fields constantly being under duress.
