2023 Season
Bears rookie Darnell Wright offers honest assessment of his first two games
Chicago Bears rookie Darnell Wright offered an honest assessment of himself after the first two games of this NFL career.
Chicago Bears rookie right tackle and 2023 first-round pick Darnell Wright is off to a good start in the NFL. His game hasn’t been perfect, but he’s proving quickly that the Bears have a long-term fixture at offensive tackle, assuming he stays healthy.
Wright has the Bears’ fourth-highest Pro Football Focus grade on offense for players with at least 50 snaps (67.3), with run blocking being his strength through two games (74.3).
“I’ve gotten better over the last two games, for sure,” Wright said via NBC Sports Chicago after Week 2’s loss to the Buccaneers. “But there are still some things I need to clean up. Rookie mistake stuff. Not rookie — there’s no excuse. Just some stuff that I – I know what to do, but just the speed of the game or whatever it may be. Just try to execute those better when they come.”
Wright has played all 126 snaps on offense for the Chicago Bears and has arguably been the team’s most effective offensive lineman. His play would be a more prominent storyline if it weren’t for how poorly the rest of the Bears’ offense (and defense) is playing.
Despite the hot start, Wright wants to improve.
“I feel like I did some good things, but there’s also things where I’m shooting myself in the foot,” Wright said. “I could have had very good games in the first game and a better game today if I had just stuck to my training and done the things I know I can do. That will be some of the things I can clean up. Doing that better, having more confidence. I can do that.”
