2023 Season
Luke Getsy on Bears offense: We’re in the process of building something special
Chicago Bears OC Luke Getsy said he believes the Bears are in the process of building something special on offense despite the slow start.
The Chicago Bears offense is one of the worst in the NFL through three games this season. They rank 27th in points scored, 31st in passing yards, and in the bottom half of the league in rushing yards, passing touchdowns, and rushing touchdowns.
The poor numbers don’t stop there. The Bears are 30th in sacks allowed and 29th in time of possession.
Bears fans expected more from this group, especially with quarterback Justin Fields entering his critical third season. After nearly setting the single-season rushing record for a quarterback in 2022, the expectations were that Fields would take the next step as a passer and become one of the NFL’s most lethal weapons.
There’s still a chance Fields can become that player. Remember, there are 14 games left on the schedule, and according to offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, the Bears are on the verge of something special on offense.
“I think we’re in the process of building something special,” Getsy said Thursday from Halas Hall. “I think that we’re in the phase of it’s Week 3 going into Week 4, and we’re going on to find a way to attack Denver in a completely different way than we did Kansas City. That’s a week-to-week challenge that you have.
‘There’s different schemes. There’s different mentalities of coordinators that you’re playing against. Like coach Flus kind of always says, you get 24 hours to enjoy or be sad about whatever the heck happened, and you move on. That’s part of our business. It’s a 17-week process. It is not a three-week process.”
I appreciate the optimism, but Bears fans aren’t buying it. Nor should they. Results are more important than words now that Chicago hasn’t won a game since October 24, 2022.
Getsy said the Bears have maintained their expectations throughout the three-game losing streak to begin the year.
“Our expectations have always been the same,” Getsy said. “It’s about [Justin Fields] getting better every single week and making sure that he’s mastering what we’re doing from our perspective. And being the leader of that unit. And I think he’s doing a really nice job in the midst of a lot of s**** right now and going on, that he’s … manning up and taking a leadership role for these guys. So, it’s been good to see him be able to put it on his shoulders and be the guy that wants to help make this thing get right.”
The Chicago Bears are beating the confidence drum. They say their focused and playing the 2023 season one week at a time. It’s admirable. But at some point, the Bears have to win a game. Otherwise, Getsy will be holding press conferences like Thursday’s in a new city next year.
