NFL Power Rankings, Week 4: Bears hit rock bottom (2023 Season)

The Chicago Bears don’t deserve any benefit of the doubt. They’re 0-4 for a reason, they’re the worst team in the NFL.

The Tampa Bay Buccanneers were a popular pick to beat the Bears in Week 2, and no one thought the Kansas City Chiefs would lose to Chicago in Week 3. Last week, the Bears were home underdogs against the lowly Denver Broncos. Their fourth-quarter collapse proved that the oddsmakers know a thing or two.

It’s more of the same in Week 5. The Bears play the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field Thursday night in a matchup that looked like a safe pick for a Bears victory when the schedule was released. Now, four games into the season, almost no one thinks Chicago can win.

According to NFL Pick Watch, 93% of experts pick the Commanders to defeat the Bears.

Washington has been one of the NFL’s over-achievers so far this year. Their 2-2 record is a fair indicator of their standing in the league, Their offense is middle-of-the-pack in almost every major statistical category.

The Commanders’ defense has been their strength. They excel at getting after the quarterback, their 13 sacks rank seventh in the NFL.

Compare that to the Bears, who only have two sacks in four games.

I don’t have any problems with experts going all-in on the Commanders. Why would anyone pick the Bears at this point? Sure, it looked like the light went on for Justin Fields against the Broncos, but until he stacks a few good games against better competition, doubt in his ability and the Bears’ offense will remain.

Sadly, Bears fans are already torn between wanting the team to win games and losing for better 2024 NFL draft positioning. A victory over the Commanders Thursday night will keep an ever-so-slight pulse for the 2023 season, but it’s foolish to think this Bears team, led by Matt Eberflus, will figure things out in time to save the year.
