WATCH: Matt Eberflus has no idea what’s going on with Justin Fields’ injury
Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus awkwardly tried to provide an update on Justin Fields and his recovery from a dislocated right thumb.
Chicago Bears coach Matt Eberflus addressed the media Wednesday and offered a bizarre and oftentimes awkward assessment of Justin Fields’ injury status for Week 10’s Thursday night game against the Carolina Panthers.
Eberflus began his press conference by saying, “Bagent will be (the Bears) starter,” but later backtracked and suggested Fields will go through a pregame workout to definitively determine his status.
Is Justin Fields doubtful? Out? Starting? A backup? Who knows, and it didn’t become any clearer after Eberflus spoke.
It does appear that Tyson Bagent will start, however. It almost felt like Eberflus was fishing for ways to explain Bagent’s starting role. Let’s face it, the Bears can’t just come out and say they want to see more from the undrafted rookie from Division II Shepherd University. Especially not if Justin Fields is healthy enough to play.
So, sure, let’s pass the buck to the medical staff — they haven’t cleared Fields yet. It’s an easy out, for now.
But it was clear Eberflus was as prepared to answer questions about Fields as his defense is to sack opposing quarterbacks on Sundays. Not very.
