Bears Injury Report, Week 17: Justin Fields could be shorthanded (News)
Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears were back at practice Wednesday and were missing a few key pieces on offense as they prepare for Week 17’s matchup against the Atlanta Falcons.

Wide receiver Darnell Mooney did not participate (DNP) as he continues his recovery from a concussion. Tight end Cole Kmet was also listed as “DNP” with a knee injury. Center Lucas Patrick (knee) was held out, too.

Not great for Justin Fields.

There was some good news on the Bears injury front, though. Left guard Teven Jenkins was listed as a full participant as he continues to work through the NFL’s concussion protocol, and running back D’Onta Foreman returned from whatever personal matter he was dealing with. He was a full participant as well.

Believe it or not, Sunday’s game against the Falcons has playoff implications. Atlanta remains in the hunt in the NFC at 7-8, while the Chicago Bears (6-9) still have a pulse. If the Bears topple the Falcons, they’ll move ahead of them in the playoff race with one game left to play.

Crazier things have happened, and as unlikely as a 2023 playoff berth is for the Bears, any hope that one comes to fruition must start with a win in Week 17.

A healthy Kmet is critical to get that victory. The big-bodied tight end is enjoying a career year with 70 catches for 678 yards and six touchdowns. Coach Matt Eberflus didn’t sound overly optimistic about Kmet’s availability in Week 17, but we’ll learn more about his status as the next few days unfold.
