ESPN: Bears' rookie class will make biggest impact in 2023 (2023 Season)

It certainly appears like Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles struck gold in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the selection of cornerback Tyrique Stevenson.

The rookie defender enjoyed his first-ever multi-interception game against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17, securing two interceptions and four passes defended.

He was named the NFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.

Stevenson has started 15 games for the Bears this year, totaling 79 tackles and a tie for the team lead with four interceptions.

Tyrique Stevenson’s performance in Week 17 was the best of his 2023 campaign by a wide margin. He earned an elite 90.5 score from Pro Football Focus, which crushed his previous season-high of 77.5 set in Week 11.

The Chicago Bears face a huge offseason decision with cornerback Jaylon Johnson, who’s enjoying a career year and is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. He’ll want to be paid like one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks. It doesn’t appear like GM Ryan Poles is willing to meet his asking price, although Johnson’s strong second half of the year could have Poles reconsidering.

Stevenson’s emergence could make the Bears feel more comfortable entering the 2024 season without a handsomely paid Jaylon Johnson on the roster. Stevenson would pair with Kyler Gordon and fellow rookie Terell Smith to form a still-formidable trio of cover guys next year. And you can bet Poles will dive into the cornerback class in the 2024 NFL Draft, as he has during his first two years on the job.

For now, kudos to Tyrique Stevenson, who will be a big part of the Chicago Bears defense for the next several years.
