It all comes down to this, Bears fans.

Well, not really. The Chicago Bears’ 2023 season is already over, but in Week 18, Justin Fields and the rest of the squad have a golden (and green) opportunity to knock the hated Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs.

A victory in the season finale would represent a signature win for coach Matt Eberflus and Fields. The pair have been lighting rods for debate and criticism throughout the season, but the Bears’ 7-5 record over the last 12 games has made their futures in Chicago seem more secure.

Eberflus appears to be a certainty to return as coach in 2024. Barring an unexpected pursuit of Jim Harbaugh or Mike Tomlin (should he and the Steelers get divorced), there isn’t a must-have coaching candidate who offers more upside than Eberflus, who’s turned Chicago’s defense into one of the NFL’s best over the second half of the season.

Fields is a bit less secure, but if GM Ryan Poles decides to stick with Fields, he’ll create a franchise-changing opportunity to trade the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL draft for a bounty that will make last year’s trade with the Carolina Panthers look like a bargain.

Justin Fields needs a strong finish to make it an easier decision, however. He had what many have described as his best game as a pro in Week 17 against the Atlanta Falcons, and if he proves he can stack two quality games in a row, with one of them being a KO punch to the Packers, it’ll be difficult imagining a scenario in which Fields isn’t back in 2024.

The intrigue in Week 18 is very real, so you gotta tune in.
