Here’s the updated list of candidates the Chicago Bears interviewed for their vacant offensive coordinator position.
The Chicago Bears are hard at work interviewing candidates to replace Luke Getsy as the team’s offensive coordinator. As of the date of this post, four coaches have been interviewed (or requests to interview them have been made.)
Here’s that group of four so far:
Shane Waldron (Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator)
Klint Kubiak (San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator)
Liam Coen (Kentucky offensive coordinator)
Greg Olson (Seattle Seahawks quarterbacks coach)
Waldron and Kubiak are the preferred options from this list. Both are young, up-and-coming offensive minds who will be on teams’ shortlists for head coaching jobs in the near future. Sure, that could be viewed as a bad thing by a team like the Chicago Bears that’s looking for continuity in its coaching staff, but the goal should be to hire the best possible candidate. Worry about 2025 in … 2025.
The one coach from this list who is a bit confusing to me is Olson, who is the coaching equivalent of a journeyman quarterback. He served as the Bears’ quarterbacks coach in 2003 and has bounced around ever since. He was the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator (2004-05) before leading the St. Louis Rams offense in 2006. He spent a couple of seasons as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC (2009-2011) before taking the same gig with the then-Oakland Raiders (2013-14). Up next was the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015 before spending a few seasons with the now Las Vegas Raiders (2018-21). Olsen served as an offensive assistant for the Los Angeles Rams last year.
If you’re a Bears fan who wants experience, Olson is your guy. I’d rather bet on upside with one of those other candidates.
The Chicago Bears will likely have a new offensive coordinator in place sometime soon, especially if they decide to hire a coach who isn’t with any of the teams left in the NFL Divisional Round (Kubiak is the one coach from this list who is).
