Could Justin Fields be headed to the Steelers? Check out this potential trade
In this hypothetical trade, the Chicago Bears send Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers. But is the trade compensation enough?
Pro Football Focus recently published an article outlining four trades that could shake up the 2024 NFL offseason, and Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields was at the top of the list.
In this hypothetical trade, PFF’s Brad Spielberger sent Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a 2024 second-round pick (No. 52 overall) and a 2025 fifth-round pick.
“Pittsburgh is one team looking for a legitimate competition at quarterback this offseason, with 2022 first-round quarterback Kenny Pickett not making the strides they’d hoped through two years, getting supplanted late in the season by third-stringer Mason Rudolph,” Spielberger wrote. “Fields’ elite athleticism adds an entirely different dynamic to a Steelers offense that was quite stale in 2023, and he opens up the downfield passing game that has been lacking.”
Smoke around the Steelers having an interest in Justin Fields has begun to rise lately. It’s been reported that Mike Tomlin is a fan of Fields, and with Pickett going through the growing pains of a young quarterback over the last two seasons, it makes sense that Pittsburgh is one of the contenders in the Fields sweepstakes.
The Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots are worth monitoring, too.
The bigger question for Chicago Bears fans to ponder is what the trade compensation for Fields should be. In this hypothetical, Chicago receives a later second-round pick this year and a Day 3 selection in 2025. Does that move the needle all that much? It certainly feels like a Justin Fields trade should command at least a high second-round selection, which is why the Falcons could be the more logical fit. Their second-round pick is currently No. 43 overall.
There’s also a chance that the Bears could package Fields and the No. 9 overall to get super aggressive in a trade-up with the Patriots for Marvin Harrison Jr. Would New England really turn down Fields and a top-10 pick for the No. 3 overall and, say, a fourth-round pick? Maybe. But it’s not out of the question.
The good news for Chicago Bears fans is that Fields will have a market. Plenty of quarterback-needy teams will view him as the top option available this offseason, and as long as two or more teams are in the bidding war, the return in a Fields trade could be surprisingly high.
