Luke Getsy sings Justin FIelds’ praises at Raiders press conference
Former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy sang Justin Fields’ praises at his Las Vegas Raiders press conference.
Chicago Bears fans know how frustrating the blame game is on offense. Year after year, they’re left to wonder if the offense’s woes are because the quarterback is underperforming or if it’s the offensive coordinator who’s incompetent.
For the 2023 Bears, former offensive coordinator Luke Getsy took the lion’s share of the blame. Bears fans are very, very defensive of Justin Fields, and while there are plenty of examples of him not seeing open receivers and missing opportunities for chunk gains last season, Getsy’s termination was universally applauded.
But Getsy is (apparently) a respected offensive mind around the NFL. It didn’t take long for the Las Vegas Raiders to hire him to be their offensive coordinator, and at his introductory press conference on Friday, he took the high road when talking about Fields.

The Raiders are on the shortlist of teams who could be in the market to trade for Fields, and Getsy’s comments certainly sound like he’d be more than excited to work with Fields again.
Las Vegas selected former Purdue quarterback Aidan O’Connell in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, and he ended up starting 10 games as a rookie. He was solid, too, completing 62.1% of his passes for 2,218 yards, 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Fields, meanwhile, started 13 games for the Chicago Bears and threw for 2,562 yards, 16 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He completed 61.4% of his passes.
Are the Raiders better off continuing O’Connell’s development, keeping their draft capital, and seeing where things go? That would be a tough sell to Raiders fans, who would all but certainly prefer that Las Vegas trades for Fields, whose upside is significantly higher than O’Connell’s.
If the Raiders do decide to trade for Justin Fields, the next logical question is: what could the Bears get for him?
Las Vegas currently holds the No. 11 pick overall, which seems a bit rich for Fields at this point. However, the Raiders’ second-round pick, No. 44 overall, could be a match.
Of course, the Bears have to want to trade Fields, and it remains unclear whether that’s the path they’ll go down. I think it’s the most likely outcome, with Caleb Wiliams being GM Ryan Poles’ selection at No. 1 overall. And if that’s the case, a deal with a team like the Raiders for a decent second-round pick is solid, even if it feels like the Chicago Bears could (or should?) get more.
