He’s trying to take a break from football? He doesn’t want to see the constant debate over whether the Bears should keep him or draft Caleb Williams? Ok, I get it. It is annoying, and I respect that he doesn’t want to be exposed to any of that while he’s on vacation.
But Justin Fields is a pro athlete, he’s the quarterback of the Chicago Bears. He should know better. That’s not a knock against Fields, either. He should know better, and… I think he does.
Fields is a smart guy. He knows exactly why people take social media seriously, it’s a medium that athletes and celebrities can use to connect with their fans. So when a quarterback unfollows his team? Of course, Bears fans and NFL fans are going to lose their minds.
I think Fields is playing chess right now. He’s trying to take control of the narrative and, potentially, force the Bears into making a public decision sooner rather than later.
“Yeah of course. Of course I want to stay. I can’t see myself playing in another place. But if it was up to me, I would want to stay in Chicago,’ Fields said. ‘I love the city. The city’s lit. The fans there are great and the people. It’s a business. I ain’t got no control over it, whatever happens, happens. I think the biggest thing with all this going on right now, I just want it to be over. Like, just let me know if I’m getting traded, let me know if I’m staying, this and that.”
