3 WRs the Bears Could Target in Free Agency
Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles could identify these three wide receiver targets in free agency.
The Chicago Bears need to add quality wide receivers opposite D.J. Moore. Whether it’s Caleb Williams or Justin Fields at quarterback next season, new offensive coordinator Shane Waldron will prefer to have more pass-catching weapons at his disposal.
Darnell Mooney is an unrestricted free agent and isn’t expected to return. Tyler Scott and Velus Jones Jr. haven’t yet developed into every-down contributors. With approximately $80 million to work with free agency, we’ve identified three free-agent receivers the Bears could target when the negotiating window opens next week.
GABE DAVIS, BUFFALO BILLS
Gabe Davis could profile as a similar like-for-like replacement for Mooney. Davis isn’t expected to re-sign with the Bills. Through four completed seasons in Buffalo, Davis totaled 163 receptions for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns. Davis was always a big-time performer in the postseason as well. Davis “wins” differently than Mooney does, but Waldron’s offense could certainly use his career average of 16.7 yards per catch.
JAUAN JENNINGS, SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
Jauan Jennings proved to be a usable weapon for the 49ers throughout their run to Super Bowl LVIII, even throwing the game’s opening touchdown on a trick play against the Chiefs. Jennings is a restricted free agent, but he’ll hope to land with a team that can offer him a bigger role than the 49ers can. If Waldron is going to install his iteration of the West Coast Offense (WCO), he’ll appreciate Jennings’ experience in a similar system under Kyle Shanahan.
JALEN GUYTON, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS
Jalen Guyton is another shrewd under-the-radar player Poles should consider acquiring. New Bears wide receivers coach Chris Beatty joined the Chargers in the same role in 2021. Guyton recorded 31 catches for 448 yards and three touchdowns that year, averaging an explosive 14.5 yards per reception. Beatty’s familiarity with Guyton could make him a target.
