What’s Next for Justin Fields Now That Kirk Cousins is an Atlanta Falcon?

The Atlanta Falcons, as expected, signed Kirk Cousins to a four-year contract Monday, leaving Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields with one less team he could go to.

The Chicago Bears and general manager Ryan Poles wanted to trade quarterback Justin Fields as soon as practically possible to avoid a prolonged presence in this awkward grey area. But here we are, only a few hours into the 2024 free agency legal tampering period, and two of Fields’ most likely suitors—the Atlanta Falcons and Pittsburgh Steelers—have added veteran quarterbacks and are no longer in the trade sweepstakes.

It’s a tough pill for Poles and Fields to swallow. Well, maybe it’s more difficult for Fields. Poles is trying to do whatever’s best for the Chicago Bears, which most Bears fans agree is selecting Caleb Williams with the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and trading Fields to the highest bidder.

At this point, the Bears just need a bidder.

The Las Vegas Raiders are still a team worth monitoring. They don’t have a quarterback who’s better than Justin Fields on their roster, and you’d think if Luke Getsy is sincerely a fan of Fields, he will bang the table to bring him to Las Vegas.

There’s also the Denver Broncos, whose starting quarterback is currently Jarrett Stidham. Ben DiNucci is the top backup. They need a quarterback. If the Chicago Bears have lowered the asking price from a second-round pick to a mid-round choice, it will behoove the Broncos not to at least kick the tires.

There’s been some talk about Fields possibly becoming a Minnesota Viking, but you can ignore that noise. There’s no chance Ryan Poles will trade him to a division rival, especially not now that the Vikings are facing their own quarterback nightmare.

The most troubling development in the Justin Fields trade situation is that veterans like Sam Darnold and Gardner Minshew are garnering more interest than him. It’s been a cold slap of reality for Chicago Bears fans who believe Fields is a quality starting quarterback.

The NFL is telling you he isn’t, which makes having the No. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft even more of a gift to Ryan Poles.
