ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on Get Up on Tuesday morning and provided the latest update on the frustrating Justin Fields trade market.

Simply put, Fields is trending toward being a backup quarterback in 2024, which means the Chicago Bears aren’t likely to get the return they were expecting in a trade.

Check it out:

This will be a very difficult reality for a large portion of the Chicago Bears fanbase to accept, and to be honest, I’m shocked that we’ve arrived here, too. I’ve long been a proponent of drafting Caleb Williams with the first overall pick, but it’s more because of how good I think Williams is than anything against Fields.

I believe in Justin Fields as an NFL starting quarterback. In fact, I believe he can be a successful NFL starting quarterback. But I don’t think his upside is as high as Williams’, and I’d be shocked if Ryan Poles didn’t agree.

But what is shocking is the lack of a trade market for Fields. A quick survey of the quarterback contracts handed out over the last 24 hours suggests many quarterback-needy teams have more confidence in players who have been career backups than Fields, which, as Schefter said, could mean Fields will have no choice but to begin next season as a QB2.

There’s still time for Poles to send Fields to a team that could give him a chance to start. The Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders, and New York Giants all have question marks at the top of their depth chart, and Fields profiles as the best quarterback on any of those rosters.

But it’ll take one of those teams making an offer Poles feels is fair for a player with Justin Fields’ upside, which remains high.
