The Chicago Bears haven’t been among the most active teams in 2024’s legal tampering period, but their signings have been calculated and effective.

General manager Ryan Poles signed three players in the first two days of free agency, including running back D’Andre Swift, safety Jonathan Owens, and a player Pro Football Focus thinks is a perfect fit for the Bears, tight end Gerald Everett.

“This was a perfect marriage here, with Chicago in need of a move tight end to pair with emerging inline stud Cole Kmet, and Everett having played for new Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron with both the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks,” PFF’s Brad Spielberger wrote. “Everett is tough to bring down in space and was always trusted by Justin Herbert on key downs. The Bears needed more pass catchers, and while they can still stand to add at wideout, Everett is a good get.”

Pro Football Focus gave the Bears an “A+” for adding Everett.

Gerald Everett always seemed to be an underrated tight end. He’s undoubtedly one of the more athletic receivers at the position, and his success after the catch is proof of that. Since 2022, he has averaged the second-most yards after the catch of all tight ends. It’s an element the Chicago Bears have been lacking from their tight ends, and that’s no disrespect to Cole Kmet.

Kmet got paid because he’s a fantastic all-around tight end. But he won’t threaten defenses after the catch anytime soon. And that’s OK, that’s why good teams complement their good players with players like Everett.

The new league year officially begins at 4 p.m. EST. Bears fans hope Ryan Poles has another move or two up his sleeve.
