Chicago Bears wide receiver DJ Moore was a big supporter of recently traded quarterback Justin Fields. He, along with cornerback Jaylon Johnson, was one of the most vocal and outspoken advocates for Fields to return.

But as is often the case in the NFL, what’s best for the team prevails over the interest of a particular player. As a result, Fields was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a conditional sixth-round pick in 2025, making it all but a foregone conclusion that the Chicago Bears will select Caleb Williams with the first overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft.

With Williams likely en route to Chicago, Moore has turned his attention from lobbying general manager Ryan Poles to keep Fields to offering advice to his soon-to-be quarterback.

“I hope he just comes in and gets ready to work,” Moore said. “You can’t worry about the legacy of Justin Fields. You got to go out there and worry (about your own thing).”

Sound advice, indeed.

The good news for Caleb Williams is that Justin Fields didn’t do much during his 38 starts as a Chicago Bear. He only won 10 games, and aside from his near-record-setting season as a running quarterback in 2022, there weren’t many unforgettable “WOW! The Bears won because of Justin Fields!” moments over the last three seasons. Sure, there were some. But not many.

As soon as Williams settles into Shane Waldron’s offense and slings a few dimes to Moore and Keenan Allen (and maybe a rookie the Bears select at No. 9 overall), the idea of not worrying about Fields’ legacy will disappear. It won’t take much for Williams to get there since Fields didn’t leave much of a legacy behind.
