4 UFL players the Chicago Bears should consider signing (News)
Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

The United Football League (UFL) will play its inaugural championship game between the Birmingham Stallions and the San Antonio Brahmas this weekend, and it’ll feature more than just the game. It’ll be a fun watch for Chicago Bears fans because there will be several quality players who GM Ryan Poles could consider signing once the UFL season ends.

The Bears have already signed players from spring football leagues. Linebacker DeMarquis Gates, who won a championship with the Stallions, was on the practice squad for the 2022 and 2023 seasons and even appeared in a few games.

Will they add another spring league star? Here are a few names for Bears fans to keep an eye on.

Carlos Davis

The starting nose tackle for the Stallions, Davis earned All-UFL honors this season, finishing with an incredible 7 sacks in 9 games. The Bears’ defensive line is still a work in progress, and Davis, the twin brother of Khalil Davis of the Houston Texans, could provide some experienced depth.

Breeland Speaks

A former second-round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs, Speaks finished the inaugural UFL season as the sacks leader, with 9.5 in 10 games, earned All-UFL honors, and was named the Defensive Player of the Year. He also led the USFL in sacks in 2023. He’s got good size for a defensive end at 6-foot-3 and 285 pounds and ran a 4.87-second 40-yard dash at the 2018 Combine.

After Montez Sweat, the Bears don’t have a lot of depth at defensive end. Adding a dominant spring football player like Speaks could be just what that position group needs.

Wyatt Ray

Ray has been an incredible force for the Brahmas this season and was considered a snub when he did not receive All-UFL honors at defensive end. He led the UFL’s top-scoring defense and picked up 5.5 sacks in 9 games. Once again, I have to mention Chicago’s lack of reliable depth at the defensive end. It just makes too much sense to bring in one of the best players from the UFL for training camp to see what he can add to the room.

Hakeem Butler

The Bears already have arguably the best wide receiver room in the NFL, but they should at least consider the UFL Offensive Player of the Year. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound receiver led the UFL with 652 receiving yards on 45 catches and pulled in 5 touchdowns.

Butler was a big reason the Battlehawks fielded one of the most potent offenses in the UFL, and San Antonio head coach Wade Phillips already told him he’s going to call NFL teams and tell them that Butler is legit. Coming from a coach like Phillips, who has been coaching football in some capacity since 1969, you know that means something.
