Bears sign speedy WR/KR/PR
The Chicago Bears upgraded their special teams units on Thursday via a speedy returner
The Chicago Bears are signing former Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver and return specialist DeAndre Carter. Jordan Schultz was first to report the news on Twitter (X). Carter adds an element of speed to the Bears’ offense and special teams groupings.

Carter originally entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens in 2015. He’s since bounced around the league as a veteran journeyman but is now slated to enter his 10th professional campaign in 2024. This actually marks his second stint with the Bears after enjoying a brief period with the franchise in 2020.
Bears special teams coordinator Richard Hightower is also familiar with Carter. Hightower held the same title with the San Francisco 49ers from 2017 to 2021. Carter briefly spent a portion of two seasons (2017-18) alongside him in San Francisco. Comfort is present.
Carter is an experienced kickoff and punt returner. He’s returned 118 kicks and 132 punts throughout his career. The new kickoff rules should be profitable to Carter, who is capable of doing serious damage via special teams.
The Bears could also be in the market for new returners this season. Velus Jones Jr. was the primary kickoff returner last season, but isn’t guaranteed to make the 53-man roster. Carter adds competition to his spot. Trent Taylor returned 23 punts for Chicago throughout 2023. Taylor signed with the 49ers earlier this offseason.
Carter will compete for a special teams role throughout the training camp and preseason periods.
