The Chicago Bears are entering the 2024 season with expectations. Head coach Matt Eberflus is expected to position his unit to compete for a postseason spot. If the Bears successfully overturn last year’s 7-10 campaign, several of Eberflus’ assistants could be well-positioned to receive head coaching interest next offseason. We’ve identified three in particular.

SHANE WALDRON | OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

New offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was hand-chosen to oversee Caleb Williams’ development. He’s installing an offense around a franchise rookie quarterback that has a great supporting cast, featuring D.J. Moore, Keenan Allen, D’Andre Swift, Rome Odunze, and others. Waldron already has a good reputation around the league after helping revive Geno Smith’s career in Seattle. Expect him to receive head coaching interest if Chicago’s offense is firing on all cylinders this season.

ERIC WASHINGTON | DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Eric Washington is Eberflus’ new defensive coordinator. He arrives in Chicago with a quality reputation after spending the previous four seasons working under Sean McDermott in Buffalo, one of the league’s longest-tenured head coaches. The Bears’ defense carries the potential to be elite in 2024. If that possibility reaches fruition, teams looking for a strong leadership type will view Washington favorably.

DAVE BORGONZI | LINEBACKERS COACH

It may be a little early for Dave Borgonzi to receive head coaching interest, but assuming a defensive coordinator role may be the next step. He’s previously worked under, or with, some brilliant defensive minds, a list that includes Lovie Smith, Leslie Frazier, Jonathan Gannon, and of course, Eberflus. The Bears may not be able to retain Borgonzi in a position coach role for much longer.
