Training Camp
Bears 2024 training camp preview: QBs
How is the Chicago Bears’ QB room shaping up ahead of training camp?
The Chicago Bears are entering training camp with four quarterbacks on the roster. There’s clarity at the top with No. 1 overall selection Caleb Williams being positioned as a face-of-the-franchise talent. Tyson Bagent should feel relatively comfortable as the backup, but there are questions present.
Let’s break down the Chicago Bears’ quarterback room ahead of the impending training camp period.
CALEB WILLIAMS
Williams is expected to end the Bears’ long-lasting search for a legitimate franchise quarterback. The former USC standout handled himself appropriately throughout rookie minicamp, OTAS, and mandatory minicamp. Williams met initial expectations as he made progress on picking up the offense.
The sky’s the limit for Williams in 2024. Offensive Rookie of the Year is well within the realm of possibility.
TYSON BAGENT
Bagent surpassed expectations as an undrafted rookie in 2023. At times, he even out-produced Justin Fields, completing 65.7% of his passing attempts while throwing for 859 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions. Bagent should feel secure as Williams’ backup quarterback, though he’ll face competition from two new faces on the roster.
BRETT RYPIEN
Brett Rypien was likely signed to a one-year contract earlier this summer due to his familiarity with Waldron and his offense. Rypien spent a portion of last season alongside Waldron with the Seattle Seahawks. His insight into the offensive scheme will be valuable to young quarterbacks like Williams and Bagent as they attempt to master the playbook.
AUSTIN REED
Austin Reed joined the Bears as an undrafted free agent out of Western Kentucky. Reed was prolific for the Hilltoppers, throwing for 8.068 yards and 71 touchdowns across two campaigns (having previously played at Southern Illinois and West Florida). The Saint Augustine native has two 4,000-yard seasons under his belt, and will likely receive plenty of reps throughout camp and the preseason.
