Two NFC North OTs named to ESPN’s Top 10 List
The Chicago Bears must deal with elite offensive tackles in the NFC North
The Chicago Bears have had a difficult time rushing the quarterback in recent seasons. The Bears produced a 31st-ranked 30 sacks last season, and a league-worse 20 quarterback takedowns in 2022. Dealing with several elite offensive tackles in the NFC North hasn’t lowered the difficulty level.
ESPN recently polled executives, coaches, and scouts to rank the NFL’s top 10 offensive tackles. Detroit Lions right tackle Penei Sewell clocked in at No. 2 overall. Unsurprisingly, Minnesota Vikings left tackle Christian Darrisaw also made the list at number six. Here’s a summary of what those polled had to say.

“Dominant run blocker and arguably the best anchor in pass protection,” an AFC executive said about Sewell. “Some OTs are great pass blockers but just average in the run game. He’s elite in both phases. Very consistent. Plays with an edge.” “A dog, physically elite, improved every year,” an NFL coordinator said about Sewell’s ascension, one that rewarded him with a massive four-year, $112 million extension earlier this offseason.
“Excellent combination of strength, athleticism and well-rounded production in both phases,” an NFL personnel director said when asked about Darrisaw. “The body control stands out.” Added an NFL personnel evaluator: “He’s a star …. Has the most upside of maybe all of them,” indicating Darrisaw hasn’t yet reached his NFL ceiling.
The Bears will rely on superstar pass rusher Montez Sweat to get the better of the likes of Sewell and Darrisaw this season. The real question is whom Sweat will receive help from in the Bears’ quest to improve their pass-rushing production this year. New defensive coordinator Eric Washington is hoping to receive improved contributions from DeMarcus Walker, Zacch Pickens, and Gervon Dexter.
If those players fail to improve, the likes of Sewell and Darrisaw may continue qualifying for this annual list with ease.
