Bears CB Jaylon Johnson on 2022 season: 'It's a complete reset' (2022 Season)
Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

It’s safe to say Chicago Bears cornerback Jaylon Johnson isn’t happy about being left off the NFL’s Top 100 Players of 2024 list. In fact, he’s pissed off.

“It’s bull**hit,” Johnson said Sunday from Halas Hall. “There ain’t no way. I don’t know how you make Pro Bowl, All-Pro, and not [be] a Top 100 guy. I could’ve been 101 I guess, but god damn, [Jets quarterback] Aaron Rodgers didn’t even play in the season and he was voted [92nd].

“I mean, hey, everybody makes mistakes, it ain’t just the media that do it. Players clearly — if they voted for it — they made some god damn mistakes. But it is what it is. At the end of the day I know the truth and it’s all right, I got some more for them.”

The truth is that Johnson is one of the NFL’s top young cornerbacks, and it’s why the Chicago Bears signed him to a four-year, $76 million contract extension in March.

He’s right to be angry. It’s one thing to say a Pro Bowler doesn’t make the list, the Pro Bowl has turned into a popularity contest these days. But an All-Pro getting snubbed? How is that possible?

Despite NFL Top 100 Players snub, Jaylon Johnson remains one of league’s lockdown corners

Jaylon Johnson was the Chicago Bears’ highest-graded defender in 2023, earning an elite 90.8 grade from Pro Football Focus. In fact, he was the highest-graded cornerback in the entire NFL. He led all cornerbacks with a 91.0 coverage grade, too.

Clearly, something went awry with the 2024 Top 100 list. Maybe now that Johnson is being paid at the top of the cornerback market, his peers will pay closer attention to his production and vote for him next year this time. Otherwise, the system is rigged, right? There’s no other explanation.

Perhaps the problem isn’t as much about Johnson as it is about the league’s players undervaluing cornerbacks. Only five made the list… five! Other cornerbacks who have a justifiable “snub” claim include Trent McDuffie (Chiefs), Derek Stingley Jr. (Texans), and Charvarius Ward (49ers).
