Stats prove how big of an impact Bears OC Thomas Brown is having on Caleb Williams
The Chicago Bears may have salvaged Caleb Williams’ rookie season by promoting Thomas Brown to offensive coordinator.
If there was any doubt about who was to blame for Caleb Williams’ midseason slump, they’ve been erased over the last two games. Former offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was a shivering, bumbling buffoon of a play-caller who nearly hijacked Williams’ rookie year and crashed it into the ground.
When the Bears finally decided to fire Waldron two weeks ago, hope was restored, and it came via passing game coordinator and former Sean McVay understudy Thomas Brown.
That hope has turned into tangible results over the last eight quarters, undoubtedly some of the best of Williams’ rookie season. Despite losing to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Williams put arguably his finest NFL game on tape, completing 32-of-47 passes for 340 yards and two touchdowns. Williams not only produced big plays and points through the passing game but also didn’t throw an interception (again), extending his interception-free streak of five games. (Why aren’t we making a bigger deal of this, by the way?)
Simply put, Williams has been unlocked. And if you need more evidence, check out this graphic:

Caleb Williams’ completion percentage has jumped by 10 points. His passer rating is up nearly 19 points. He’s throwing for almost 100 more yards per game, too.
“His confidence is through the roof,” Bears WR DJ Moore said after the Vikings game. “He’s understanding all these game plans through and through. To see him go out there and be able to play quarterback the way he wants to, it’s amazing to see.”

The Williams-Brown marriage is working. It’s working so well that Brown should be a priority candidate to replace Matt Eberflus when the Bears coach is eventually terminated.
“He has a certain aura to him where he just allows you to play free,” Williams said of his offensive coordinator. “He knows what he wants. You know what he wants.”
It would be great if the Chicago Bears could win one of these close games, but Bears fans know what they want, too: a legitimate franchise quarterback. Williams is proving he’s that guy and more under Brown’s tutelage.
