Thomas Brown already proving more capable than Matt Eberflus after one press conference
Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown did something in his first press conference that Matt Eberflus had not done in three years with the team.
Chicago Bears interim head coach Thomas Brown is an impressive guy. It doesn’t take many soundbites to realize that. He commands your attention, and that matters in NFL locker rooms. For a coach to lead professional football players, he not only has to connect with them, but he also must demand greatness from them. There’s little doubt Brown will check both boxes.
It took only one press conference, the first sine being named interim head coach, for Brown to make his presence felt.
“I’m not above coaching. I’m not above accountability. So we will get that done together,” Brown said Monday. ‘It’s about being resilient. No matter what happens, nobody cares what’s happened before or what will happen in the future. Overcome it, fight through it. It’s not about the event, it’s about the response. So respond the right way, together collectively, and go attack.”
Brown said that coachability, accountability, and dependability are the three tenets he will use to coach the Bears. And its the second one, accountability, that seemed to escape Matt Eberflus throughout his tenure in Chicago. Rather than admit his errors, he’d double-down on decisions like not calling a timeout before the Washington Commanders dialed up a Hail Mary or not trying for a few more yards before the Green Bay Packers eventually blocked a game-winning field goal. Eberflus refused to accept blame, Brown is already proving he will accept it if warranted.
“There are certain people, when you watch, you’re like, ‘Man, they’re a little different in terms of the competitiveness, the spirit, the never-say-die attitude.’ And then just his overall presence in general is impressive.”
Perhaps the Chicago Bears” coaching search won’t be complicated after all. If Brown continues the momentum he’s built with Caleb Williams and turns it into wins as head coach, the Bears would be foolish to think a better option exists outside the building.
