Najee Harris’ Chargers training camp status update after eye injury
Los Angeles Chargers running back Najee Harris might not be ready for the start of training camp following a fireworks accident during the July 4 holiday.
“Chargers GM Joe Hortiz said that RB Najee Harris is in the Bay Area with doctors and will report to camp later today,” ESPN’s Kris Rhim wrote on X. “The Chargers haven’t seen the extent of Harris injury yet. Hortiz said the plan is likely for Harris to start training camp on the (Non-Football Injury) list.”
Harris signed a one-year, $5.25 million contract with the Chargers this offseason. He appeared set to be the bell cow in coach Jim Harbaugh’s ground-and-pound offense, but the 2025 NFL Draft welcomed Omarion Hampton in the first round. Los Angeles appears headed for a running back by committee, with Hampton eventually taking over as the RB1.
Najee Harris entered the NFL as a first-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2021. He’s run for more than 1,000 yards in each of his first four seasons, including 1,043 yards and six scores last season.
Harris’ eye injury has been described as superficial, and there’s a chance he’ll avoid the NFI list.
“Nothing is set in stone,” Hortiz said.
