Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has a lot of critics these days. But as long as those critics remain outside of Halas Hall, all is well.

In fact, the opposite is true inside the Bears’ building. One of Williams’ biggest fans happens to also be one of the players who’ll be critical to his success in 2025: second-year WR Rome Odunze.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler appeared on ‘Get Up‘ on Thursday and shared what Odunze told him during his Bears training camp visit.

“Rome Odunze told me Caleb Williams can literally be the best quarterback in the NFL,” Fowler said. “He’s far away from that right now. You mentioned deconstruction. That’s exactly right. Ben Johnson has been relentless on him with the details.

“They’re just trying to get him to do the basics right now, and then they’ll work on the off-scripted plays, the mobility, all his strengths. That will come. Now, the Chicago Bears ‘ elite quarterback play is an oxymoron. It’s always been that way, but as far as the ability, they see it. The player recognizes it. They just have to get it out of him.”

It blows my mind how impatient the national media has been with Williams’ development, especially after a rookie season that was actually pretty darn good.

Williams threw for more than 3,500 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2024, and he set the NFL rookie record for the most consecutive passes without an interception. If it wasn’t for Jayden Daniels’ meteoric rise to superstardom, we’d be talking about Williams as one of the top handful of young QBs in the league.

The good news is that Chicago Bears players still believe in Williams. And, it’s not like that belief is limited to Williams being a solid starting quarterback. As Odunze noted, there are players inside the locker room who believe Williams can be the best starting quarterback in the NFL.

Maybe the talking heads should take notice of that instead of one or two bad passes in practice.
