Ben Johnson raves about Caleb Williams’ mental prowess, preparation
Chicago Bears head coach loves the mental traits and dedication to preparation that quarterback Caleb Williams brings to the table every week.
Plenty has been said about Caleb Williams’ rare physical traits, and the playmaking ability he brings to the table as the Chicago Bears’ franchise quarterback.
But last year’s No. 1 overall draft pick still doesn’t get enough credit for the mental part of his game, and Bears head coach Ben Johnson has certainly been impressed by that area of Williams’ skill set.
“What I’m most impressed at with him and his process is the next day, he really locks everything in from the day before,” Johnson told Bears team writer Larry Mayer. “He really locks everything in from the day before. We don’t have to go back and revisit it again. He’s a quick study in that regard, and because of that, we can load up the game plan more each week.”
For Williams’ part, he loves the on-field confidence that comes with Johnson’s prowess as an offensive mind and a play-caller, another unique skill set that puts Williams and the offense in position to maximize their talents between the lines.
“Him and I talk and meet every single day,” Williams told Mayer. “And then getting out there on the practice field builds a lot of confidence in him to be able to call the plays whatever moment it is … whether it’s fourth-and-4 on the goal line and the trust between us to be able to try and go get it. A lot of it is practice and a lot of it’s us, the afterhours that we spend here.”
We’re only three games into this marriage between Williams and Johnson, and if the early returns are any indication, the future is incredibly bright for the Bears.
