Bears trade for 1st-round pass rusher, swap draft picks with Browns
The Chicago Bears made an attempt to bolster their depth along the defensive front at the NFL trade deadline Tuesday.
The Chicago Bears did make one deal before the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, acquiring pass rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka from the Cleveland Browns.
The Browns sent a seventh-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft to Chicago along with Tryon-Shoyinka, while the Bears gave up their sixth-round pick, per multiple reports:
A first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of Washington by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tryon-Shoyinka has struggled to live up to his original draft slot. After the Bucs declined to pick up the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, Tryon-Shoyinka signed a one-year deal with the Browns heading into the 2025 season.
In 74 career games (45 starts), Tryon-Shoyinka has tallied 15 sacks, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. In eight games with the Browns so far this season, Tryon-Shoyinka has notched just nine tackles, with zero sacks.
The Bears could definitely use some added depth at defensive end after losing Dayo Odeyingbo to a season-ending injury last week, but this move doesn’t move the needle much. Tryon-Shoyinka was lauded for his size, athleticism and upside coming out of college, but that potential has yet to translate into production in the NFL.
Hopefully, that changes now that he’s in Chicago.
