I’m pumped to unveil the first year of our BearsTalk Grades (BTG) for the 2025 NFL season. Rather than rely on analytics websites that spread their time across all 32 teams, our BTGs will be the result of a round-the-clock study of Chicago Bears film.

While this will be a premium feature on BearsTalk, we’re giving a free sample of what you can expect with the NFL debuts of Kyle Monangai and Colston Loveland.

First, Monangai.

The seventh-round pick from Rutgers earned a 50.6. Not great. His rushing score (62.5) was weighed down by his poor performance in the passing game (40.9), which might be something Bears fans should get used to this preseason.

Monangai was overwhelmed by NFL power as a pass protector. I expect him to learn from this rough outing, but if he doesn’t prove over the next two preseason games that he can handle NFL pass rushers, it’ll be hard for coach Ben Johnson to trust him.

Loveland, meanwhile, had a limited NFL debut. He only played six snaps and scored a 52.1 BTG.

It was a mixed bag for Loveland. His 52.5 receiving score left a bit to be desired from a player who’s long been described as a pass-game mismatch. His routes looked a bit rusty and clunky. NFL jitters, right?

His 50.0 grade in the run game will improve as the volume of snaps goes up.

MONANGAI, KyleRB50.640.962.5

A note on the grades: a BTG between 50-59 is considered “average.’ Below 50 is “poor,” while a 60-69 is “above average.”

Translation? Loveland was all-around average, while Monangai was above-average as a runner and poor as a pass protector.
