The Chicago Bears’ 2025 preseason really begins this week against the Buffalo Bills. Fans will finally get a glimpse at what coach Ben Johnson’s offense might look like with starters in the game, including Caleb Williams, who’s had quite the wild ride this offseason.

And Williams hasn’t done a damn thing to deserve it.

The talking heads have been relentless in their effort to overanalyze every missed throw in practice. Williams’ body language has been studied ad nauseam. The fact Johnson held him out of the first preseason game was somehow interpreted as a coach trying to hide his quarterback’s flaws.

In other words, it’s been downright ridiculous.

Yet, it should be expected by Bears fans. This has been the way the national media has treated Chicago Bears quarterbacks since the departure of Jim McMahon. And, look: the franchise has no one to blame but itself.

However, Williams deserves a clean slate (does he even need one?) under Johnson, who, prior to joining the Bears, was viewed as the brightest offensive mind in football. He’ll get the most out of the 2024 first-overall pick. And when he does? Oh, it’s going to be fun listening to those same talking heads eat crow.

Perhaps it will happen as soon as this Sunday night’s preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.
