The Chicago Bears have one of the worst rushing offenses in the NFL right now, currently rankings 30th in the league.

Speaking to the media as the Bears return from their Week 5 bye, head coach Ben Johnson was asked how his team will be able to improve their ability to run the ball effectively on a more consistent basis.

Here’s what he had to say:

D’Andre Swift has shown flashes of big-play ability, but he just hasn’t been a reliable presence on an every-down basis as the lead back. Roschon Johnson and rookie Kyle Monangai have both been banged up throughout the first few weeks of the season, and neither has moved the needle much as a change-of-back runner behind Swift.

Throw in some inconsistent play from the offensive line in front of these backs, and you’ve had a recipe for a ground game that hasn’t done much to keep the offense balanced and take pressure off Caleb Williams and the passing game.

Johnson is clearly aware of the improvements that need to be made, but we’ll have to see if the on-field product reflects those positive changes the rest of the way.
