Colston Loveland earns strong grade in NFL.com’s 2025 NFL Draft look back

Chicago Bears first-round pick Colston Loveland has had exactly the kind of rookie season that GM Ryan Poles and coach Ben Johnson could’ve hoped for.

He began the year slowly as he transitioned from offseason shoulder surgery to his role as Cole Kmet’s understudy. However, over the last six games or so, he’s silenced all doubt about being the right pick at No. 10 overall.

Loveland enters Week 15 fourth on the Bears in receptions (35), third in receiving yards (435), and second in receiving touchdowns (4).

The analytics support Loveland’s strong year, too. He’s Pro Football Focus’s highest-graded rookie tight end (75.5). Tyler Warren, who started the season hot and has since cooled off, enters Week 15 with a 68.5 grade.

NFL.com’s Bucky Brooks recently published a look back at the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He issued a grade for all 32 picks. With 14 weeks in the books, it’s a good time to revisit which teams did well in Round 1.

The Bears should be happy with their report card.

“It took a while for first-year head coach Ben Johnson to determine how to maximize his playmakers on the perimeter, particularly this big-bodied target between the hashes,” Brooks wrote. “As the ideal complement to a WR corps loaded with catch-and-run specialists, Loveland has helped Chicago emerge as a playoff contender this season.”

Brooks gave the Bears a B.

It’s a fair grade, considering it did take a bit of time for Johnson to unlock Loveland’s upside in the offense.

With four games left to play in 2025, Colston Loveland has a good chance to finish his rookie season with straight As.
