Bears Sign QB Brett Rypien
The Chicago Bears are adding competition to their quarterback room with veteran Brett Rypien.
The Chicago Bears have signed free-agent quarterback Brett Rypien to a one-year contract, the team announced via its official social media pages. Rypien spent last season with the Seattle Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams. He’ll attempt to push Tyson Bagent and Nathan Peterman for the backup job.

Rypien entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Boise State. He signed with the Denver Broncos at the conclusion of the 2019 NFL Draft. Bears offensive coordinator Shane Waldron coached Rypien in Seattle last season. That familiarity likely led to the Bears viewing Rypien as an ideal candidate to add competition to their quarterback room.
Rypien has completed 98 of 168 career regular-season passes for a completion percentage of 58.3%. Rypien has thrown for 950 yards, four touchdowns, and nine interceptions. He’s seen extension action throughout the preseason as well. Rypien’s familiarity with Waldron’s offense will help the Bears quarterbacks pick up the scheme quicker over the summer. It would be especially helpful to a rookie quarterback like Caleb Williams.
