HBO’s Hard Knocks features awesome segment on Bears WR Rome Odunze
Chicago Bears rookie WR Rome Odunze was recently the highlight of HBO’s Hard Knocks
The New York Giants are currently featured in HBO’s “Hard Knocks” series. This iteration is an offseason one that’s offering unprecedented access into the NFL free agency and draft periods. Several prospects have been highlighted throughout the debut episodes, including Chicago Bears rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
In the latest episode, there’s another feature on Bears rookie receiver Rome Odunze. It begins with Giants general manager Joe Schoen telling his assistants, “You need to tell me every time Odunze’s up if I’m not paying attention,” at the NFL Scouting Combine. clearly proving that the elite prospect was a focal point of their pre-draft studies.

The clip then shifts to Odunze sitting with Schoen, head coach Brian Daboll, and other Giants decision-makers in the interview room. The Giants ask Odunze to describe his best trait, excluding physical ones like size and speed from the equation. The Washington standout’s answer impressed the brass in attendance.
“I would say my versatility,” Odunze replies. “I’ve played inside [the slot] a lot in my career. I’m a blocker that can get down on the line [of scrimmage] and get the job done. I think I play pretty well outside as well. You can plug-and-play me wherever you want. I’m going to get the job done.”
When asked why the Giants should draft Odunze, he replies, “Other than my on-field skills, I’m going to come into your locker room and bring the energy, bring the juice and adhere to a high standard. I’m a leader that other players can look to when it comes to doing things right. I carry myself in a manner that inspires others.”
“You’re an impressive young man,” The Giants replied.
Of course, the Giants ultimately passed on Odunze at No. 6 overall in favor of another wide receiver prospect in Malik Nabers. The Bears were thrilled with the opportunity to draft the Huskies wideout just three selections later at No. 9. HBO’s clip insinuates Odunze was nearly drafted by the Giants instead.
